Having cancer is a challenge, to say the least. One of the most disturbing components on a patient’s cancer journey, is the crushing and debilitating fatigue that it brings. Although fatigue can be attributed to the disease itself, it is also a common side effect of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Although cancer fatigue can be ongoing, there are certain things that the cancer patient can do to help reduce the severity and frequency of cancer fatigue.

One of the most important things that a cancer patient can do to beat cancer fatigue is to eat right. Consuming a healthy diet during cancer treatments is not always an option for patients, however, it is very important that the patient keep up his strength and consume essential vitamins and nutrients. Eating well, promotes a feeling a well being, and is an essential component in the healing process.

Another way to beat cancer fatigue is with mild exercise. Again, exercising when not feeling well is not easy, however, mild exercise can prevent muscles from becoming atrophied, and can restore energy. In addition, cancer patients who exercise can relieve anxiety and depression. These feelings are common after a cancer diagnosis, however, exercising can eliminate some of these feelings by releasing “feel good” chemicals in the brain. Patients need to always remember to check with their health care provider before embarking on an exercise program.

Perhaps the most beneficial thing a cancer patient can do to beat cancer fatigue is to get enough recuperative sleep. This can sometimes be difficult, especially when patients have households, family and jobs to consider, however, it is vital. Getting enough sleep is energizing, and prepares the patient to better handle challenges and treatments. Without adequate sleep, the immune system does not function properly, leaving the patient more fatigued, and more susceptible to further illness and infection.
