Losing hair during cancer treatments may be one of the hardest side effects of chemotherapy. In today’s society where long and luxurious hair is displayed in many commercials and advertisements, dealing with the loss of your hair can be a difficult thing to overcome. While dealing with hair loss will be difficult, there are things that you can do to help cope with the loss.

Many people think that hair loss is just a side effect of chemotherapy, and they would be right, but it goes deeper than that. Hair loss during chemotherapy is due to the chemicals in chemotherapy harming the cells that grow hair. Because of this, any hair on your body is likely to fall out. Understanding the causes of hair loss may make dealing with losing your hair easier.

Still, no matter what knowledge you may have, living without hair in a hair-centered world, can be difficult. There are things that you can do to help you cope. First, it is fine to admit that you feel depressed about losing your hair. People are very focused on outward beauty. We live in a culture where beauty ads run on TV constantly, so missing your locks does not make you a bad person. Finding a support group may help you meet other people who understand what you are going through.

You may decide that you would like to wear a wig. Wearing a wig can make you feel comfortable going out in public. Since people will most likely stare at someone without hair, a wig is a great alternative. Wigs can even be fun. Since the people that mean the most to you already know that you wear a wig, there is no reason why you can’t try on different wigs. You could be a blonde, brunette, and red head all in the same day.
