Having cancer and withstanding treatments can zap energy, cause profound fatigue and promote feelings of helplessness. Research is emerging that by having a pet, cancer patients can dramatically increase their energy levels and restore vitality and hope. Pet ownership has many benefits to the cancer patient that include companionship. When patients experience loneliness, they may become more hopeless and more fatigued. The presence of a pet can renew a more positive environment and even give the patient a healthier appetite.

Owning a pet means that the owner will need to take care of it. This means focusing on care giving to another being, while taking some of the focus off their own needs for a while. This can sometimes provide welcome relieve from their troubles, while focusing on the needs of their animals. In addition, owning a dog almost always means that the dog will need walks. If the patient is able, walking their dog is an excellent way for them to get mild exercise and reduce fatigue – a situation beneficial for both pet and pet owner.

The compassion and companionship that pets provide is valuable to the patient. When people are in contact with their pets, actual physiologic changes can take place. These changes can include lowered blood pressure and lower respiratory levels, while evoking a feeling of calmness, serenity and peacefulness. These changes can also result in a reversal of fatigue and lack of energy. Playing with a pet, can bring enjoyment to a cancer patient as well. Playing fetch with a dog out in the fresh air can do wonders for the respiratory system, as well as for the muscles. In addition, when patients exercise, their digestion improves. Sluggish digestion can cause fatigue and add to exhaustion. Having a pet makes the patient feel needed, reduces loneliness and gives them a feeling a purpose, both extremely important components in the healing process.
